How to create a homepage that turns visitors into enquiries
Your homepage has a few seconds to answer three questions: what do you do, is it for me, and what should I do next? Here’s how to structure a small business homepage that answers them and turns visitors into enquiries.

What "converts" means for a small business
A conversion is simply the action you want a visitor to take: an enquiry, a phone call, a booking, a quote request or a visit to your shop. Pick one main action for your homepage. Everything on the page should make that action feel easy and worth taking.
1. A headline that says what you do, and for whom
Your headline is the most important line on the page. A simple formula works for most businesses: what you do + who it’s for + where, with a benefit if it fits.
“Licensed electricians for homes and small businesses in the inner west” tells visitors far more than “Welcome to our website”. For a real estate agency, “Helping local families buy and sell with confidence” beats a generic slogan.
2. One clear call to action
Use a button that names the action: “Get a free quote”, “Book an appointment”, “See our menu” or “Book a free appraisal”. Put it in the header, in the hero section and again at the end of the page. Too many competing buttons make people hesitate.
3. Real photos of real work
Show your work, your team at work, your premises or your products. Authentic photos build trust in a way generic stock images can’t. For property businesses, professional photography, video walkthroughs and virtual tours do the same job.
4. Make the next step obvious
Help each visitor find what they came for. A service business might list its main services with a link to each; a retailer might show its main categories; a property website needs search by suburb, price and property type near the top.
5. Proof and trust
- Genuine customer reviews, shared with permission
- Licences, accreditations and memberships
- Photos of completed work or before-and-after shots
- Guarantees and clear policies
- Clear contact details, so people know you are real
Keep it genuine. Never invent reviews or testimonials. Under Australian Consumer Law, fake or selectively edited reviews can be misleading, and the ACCC has taken action against businesses for it.
6. Built for phones first
Most visitors will see your homepage on a phone. Keep paragraphs short, buttons large and easy to tap, add tap-to-call for your phone number, and make sure the page loads quickly on mobile data.
7. Easy for Google to understand
- A descriptive page title and meta description
- One H1 headline, with clear H2 headings below it
- Descriptive alt text on images
- A secure HTTPS address and fast loading
- Links to your main service pages
- Natural mentions of the areas you serve

A simple homepage structure
- Header: logo, short navigation and your main button
- Hero: headline, one supporting sentence, the main button and a real photo
- Trust strip: licences, guarantees or a short review line
- Services: your main services, each linking to its own page
- Why choose you: three or four specific reasons
- Proof: reviews or recent work
- How it works: three or four simple steps
- Common questions: the objections people raise most often
- Final call to action: repeat the main action, with your contact details
Quick homepage checklist
- A stranger can tell what you do within five seconds
- There is one obvious main action
- Photos show your real work or business
- Proof is visible before the halfway point
- It works well on a phone
- Every main service links to its own page
Common questions
How long should a homepage be?
Long enough to answer the main questions and objections, and no longer. A focused homepage with seven to nine clear sections usually works better than a very long page.
Should I show prices on my homepage?
If your prices are fixed and competitive, showing a starting price can filter out poor-fit enquiries and build trust. If every job is quoted, explain how quoting works instead.
